Record Race Day – Jock River
[dropcap]S[/dropcap]Saturday was race day in Richmond and it could not have been a better day for the annual Jock River Canoe Race!
The Jock River Canoe race, a great spring time adventure, is billed as “A friendly canoe and kayak race in eastern Ontario”. It has become a right of Spring for paddlers and racers eager to get on the water. The 12.5 km race begins on the Munster Rd. about 2 km south of the Franktown Rd., continues through rapids, some fast water and the famous Richmond Fen wetlands to a wider section of the river. More rapids pull you out of the calm of the Fen testing your skill before bringing you into sight of Richmond and the finish line at the Jock River Park.
This years race was one for the record books with 135 teams signed up for the 47th edition of the Jock River Race! A delay of 2 weeks due to the cool spring weather payed dividends with great water levels and great weather, a combination that may have contributed to some fast results. Five teams finished in under one hour according to the race results posted on the organizer’s website here. You can also check out some great photos of the teams on and off the water.
